German Sign Language (German: Deutsche Gebärdensprache, DGS) is the sign language of the deaf community in Germany, Luxembourg, and the German-speaking community of Belgium. Estimates regarding the precise number of active DGS signers vary considerably; Gallaudet University estimated approximately 50,000 primary users as of 1986, while broader contemporary estimates range up to 80,000. The language has evolved naturally through continuous use within deaf communities over several centuries.
