Colony of Liberia

Liberia, officially the Colony of Liberia, later the Commonwealth of Liberia, was a private colony of the American Colonization Society between 1821 and 1847, when it declared independence and became the Republic of Liberia. It was not recognized by the United States until September 23, 1862.
