Painting and Sculpture
Dido building Carthage, or The Rise of the Carthaginian Empire is an 1815 oil on canvas history painting by the English artist J. M. W. Turner. It depicts the construction of Carthage directed by Queen Dido, the legendary founder of that city-state. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1815 and was inspired by Claude Lorrain's The Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba, painted in 1648.
