Church of St. Johns, Vilnius
Church of St. Johns, Vilnius

The Church of St. Johns (Lithuanian: Šv. Jonų bažnyčia), officially named St. John the Baptist and St. John the Apostle and Evangelist (Lithuanian: Vilniaus Šv. Jono Krikštytojo ir Šv. Jono apaštalo ir evangelisto bažnyčia), is located at the Old Town of Vilnius, Lithuania and dominates the university (Vilnius University) ensemble. The church is dedicated to both John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. The church and its bell tower are prominent examples of the Vilnian Baroque, while its Baroque appearance was designed by architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz. The bell tower of the church with a height of 69-metre (226 ft) is the tallest building of the Vilnius Old Town. Since the times of the Jesuit Academy professors and students used to pray here, and Vilnius theologians gave sermons. It was a place for performances and disputes, where thesis were defended and monarchs greeted. Since the 16th century it serves as a venue for the Vilnius University diploma awarding ceremonies upon students graduation. The church services in the church are held only in Lithuanian language. The church is also used for concerts.
