Designed by local architect Milton Stratton and completed in 1917, it is a locally significant example of Jacobethan Revival architecture. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 1998, for its architectural significance. It later served as the headquarters and museum of the Bar Harbor Historical Society from 1997 until the society moved to the La Rochelle mansion in 2019.
