Burbank is a city in the southeastern end of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Located 7 miles (11 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, Burbank had a population of 102,988 as of 2025. The city was named after David Burbank, who established a sheep ranch there in 1867. Burbank consists of two distinct areas: a downtown/foothill section, in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, and the flatland section. Located about six miles northeast of Hollywood, Burbank is a major center of the American media and entertainment industry and is commonly known as the "Media Capital of the World". Warner Bros. Entertainment and The Walt Disney Company are headquartered in Burbank, while Nickelodeon Animation Studio, 20th Century Studios, The Burbank Studios, Cartoon Network Studios and other major entertainment companies maintain offices, studios or production facilities there. The CW broadcast television network is also based in the city. Burbank's association with television was reinforced through the recurring joke "beautiful downtown Burbank" popularized by Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and later referenced on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, both of which were taped at NBC's former studios. The Hollywood Burbank Airport was the location of Lockheed's Skunk Works, which produced some of the most secret and technologically advanced airplanes, including the U-2 spy planes. Burbank is home to a 456,000-square-foot IKEA store, which was the largest IKEA location in the United States when it opened in 2017.
