1962 (MCMLXII) was a common year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar, the 1962nd year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 962nd year of the 2nd millennium, the 62nd year of the 20th century, and the 3rd year of the 1960s decade. The year saw the Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest the world came to a nuclear confrontation during the Cold War. The major American retailers Walmart, Kmart, and Target all open their first stores, which would in decades to come, expand very rapidly.
